easy wood projects
The first ever summer school at the centre is well under way now with a great range of two, four and five day workshops going on. I taught an up-cycle project using demolition rimu floorboards - the class of four all completed their Shaker Style Shelves to a very high standard and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. Unfortunately I was so caught up in the moment I forgot to take photos.
However - I took part in Lachie & Hughs chainsaw milling day and took lots of photos. It was a great day, very informative, very noisy and very enjoyable. We milled a couple of European Cherry trunks and got five decent sized two inch boards out of each. Theyll be three years drying before they can be used, so Ive made a diary note to pop back down to Nelson for a few weeks in January 2017 to make something...

Lachie setting up for the first cut - using some 2x4s to get the first straight cut
Lachie revealing the inside of the first log
Planing the surface to make sure its nice and true for the following cuts
So we milled the little one on the right! The other two logs are from a Cedar that the council felled in Queens Gardens Nelson
Lachie briefing Rory to make a cut
Hugh and Rory making the cut with Thorkild behind acting as wedgeman
The two logs stacked on stickers to dry for three years
And Lachie couldnt resist having a go at one of those big cedars...
