easy wood projects
Last Friday tools were downed (especially saws) for the morning, to observe local Saw Doctor Ron Karsten demonstrate his art. Mr Karsten a carpenter by trade and local secondhand tool dealer, has many years experience in what is a dying art.
As all good woodworkers will know, proper maintenance of tools is just as important as the work to be carried out with them. But the skill of restoring and sharpening a Rip or Crosscut Saw is often forgotten behind plane blade and chisel sharpening. After watching Ron at work it may be the case that it is just a little trickier than those other sharpening techniques. But Ron was keen to stress "practice, practice, practice" and you will see the results.
It was amazing to see Ron turn a saw without teeth into one with shiny new ones in a matter of seconds. After a quick look through the old saw bag Ron explained to us how to put the set (protrusion of the teeth away from the blade) on the saw and the appropriate angle on which to file the teeth.
