Up-cycling is the process of converting waste materials or items that have outlived their original use into something new and exciting – and we ran the first Up-cycling Workshop at the Centre this past weekend.
Using salvaged materials is something close to my heart – it can be more time consuming and sometimes more expensive than using fresh timber boards – but for me it’s an ethical choice and about minimising waste.
Friend and Trustee of the Centre For Fine Woodworking Bob Frame secured for us a stack of salvaged floorboards from the old Lincoln Community Centre which was demolished post Canterbury
The floorboards are rimu and some 100 years old. The Lincoln Community Centre was known to have one of the best indoor bowling floors in the country, and for a while stiletto heels were not allowed to be worn at dances! They obviously lifted that rule because the boards are pitted with little stiletto marks! I spent a bit of time cleaning up the boards before machining them – removing any nails and the varnish, trimming off the tongue and grooves which were gummed up with 100 years of grit. Once cleaned up and machined, the rimu came out looking fabulous.
The first workshop was ‘make a picture frame’ and we’re running another one at the end of the month which will be ‘make a Shaker style shelf’. These workshops will be run again in January at the inaugural CFW Summer School.
