easy wood projects
Every now and again I drop a box of off-cuts from the machine room to my neighbours for fire wood. They are always amazed at the variety and quality of the "kindling" that we create down here in the workshop. Cheesy as it may sound, it made me appreciate what we are surrounded by on a daily basis.
Before I returned to my bench the other night for some late night planing, I had a walk around to see what wood is being crafted at the moment..
Olea Europa, wind blown olive wood from Italy..
Quercus Alba. Quarter-sawn American White oak..
Quilted sycamore, and some crispy dovetails there from resident craftsman Thorkild Hansen..
A piece of Acacia Koa from the Hawaiian Islands, given to John by our friends at Hearne Hardwoords..
A nice set of bookmatched maple veneers..
And last but not least, full-time student Tim Gemmell was so happy with the walnut shavings he made the other day that he got the camera out..
Last night to celebrate the end of chair-making, the ceremonial burning of mock-ups took place in the school car park. It was quite a sight! And so too are the 8 finished(ish) chairs that have replaced them..tune in next week for some great pictures of the past few days here at CFW..
